WA iron-ore tailings geopolymer bricks

Western Australian iron-ore tailings were used as the principal feedstock in alkali-activated geopolymer bricks.

Western Australia, AustraliaLaboratoryLaboratory evidence

What was developed or tested

The study reported XRD, activator and curing optimisation, compressive strength, absorption, durability and an indicative cost assessment. Peak strength exceeded 50 MPa.

What the evidence supports

A prominent Australian laboratory case with high reported mechanical performance. Pilot production, durability exposure and reagent economics remain gates.

Environmental and technical uncertainty

Avoiding kiln firing can reduce thermal demand, but activator manufacture, caustic handling and leachability must be included in whole-of-life assessment.

Benefit-case screening lens

Potential value: Potential co-product revenue, reduced demand for virgin aggregate or binder inputs, local supply and avoided tailings storage.

Deployment constraints: Product specification, consistency, processing and binder demand, customer qualification, market volume, haulage distance and residual liability.

Question before applying elsewhere

Does the site-specific residue meet durability, leaching, production-control and applicable material-specification requirements at the proposed scale?
