Wheal Jane mine-water treatment

A long-running active scheme manages high-flow contaminated water from the former mine after passive pilot trials.

Cornwall, United KingdomOperatingOperating evidence

What was developed or tested

The system uses lime dosing, aeration, high-density sludge recirculation, clarification and continuous monitoring; passive lagoons were also trialled.

What the evidence supports

An environmental-management benchmark showing why treatment selection must follow flow, chemistry, space and residuals. It is not presented as material reuse.

Environmental and technical uncertainty

The case demonstrates metals removal but also the land and flow limitations of passive systems and the need to manage treatment sludge.

Benefit-case screening lens

Potential value: Potential value includes water recovery, a reduced discharge burden and support for compliance. Some projects may also recover metals or useful treatment products when the evidence supports that outcome.

Deployment constraints: Flow and chemistry variability, consumables, energy, plant reliability, sludge or spent-media management and long-term treatment obligations.

Question before applying elsewhere

Can treatment performance, media life, hydraulic behaviour and spent-material management be demonstrated under representative field conditions?
