Technical field notes

Short notes for the questions between paper and project.

These notes interpret recurring engineering themes across the library. They are designed to make discussion easier, not to replace project-specific investigation or design.

NOTE 01 · CHARACTERISATION

Variability is not noise—it is design information.

A single composite sample can show whether a pathway is chemically possible while hiding the distribution that a plant or product must handle. Spatial location, depositional history, ore domains, process changes, oxidation and moisture all influence the result.

A useful reuse programme should define the decision population, preserve sample provenance and test the range likely to control performance—not only the average. The transfer question is therefore not “does this tailings work?” but “which material domains work, under which controls, and with what failure envelope?”

NOTE 02 · SCALE-UP

A strong laboratory result is the start of process design.

Laboratory batches minimise variation, handling distance and production interruptions. Pilot work begins to expose the practical system: dewatering, segregation, reagent supply, mixing energy, curing, quality control and secondary residues.

Scale-up evidence should connect performance to a mass balance, water balance and operating window. If the pathway relies on unusually clean samples, tight chemistry or intensive preparation, those conditions must appear in the deployment case and economics.

NOTE 03 · DEPLOYMENT

“Can be made” is different from “can be specified.”

Infrastructure materials enter a system of standards, design lives, exposure classes, traceability, product consistency and liability. A novel material needs a defined use, not simply an attractive strength result.

Work backwards from the intended specification and purchaser: identify mandatory properties, environmental release scenarios, surveillance testing, production tolerances and approval responsibilities. This often reveals the most efficient next test—and whether a lower-risk application is a better first market.
