Mining waste in construction research

Vicente Zetola; Brian F. Keith; Elizabeth J. Lam; Ítalo L. Montofré; Rodrigo J. Rojas; Juan Marín; Mathias Becerra

From Mine Waste to Construction Materials: A Bibliometric Analysis of Mining Waste Recovery and Tailing Utilization in Construction (2024).

What was analysed

Zetola and colleagues mapped 1,096 Web of Science records from 2010–2024 using CiteSpace: 1,039 research articles and 57 reviews. The dataset was collected on 23 October 2024.

§2 ↗

What the analysis shows

The paper maps research themes and connections in mining-waste construction research. It identifies work on concrete, cementitious materials and geopolymers. These are publication patterns, rather than measurements of a particular material’s performance.

§§3–4 ↗

Study limits

The authors identify single-database and English-language coverage biases. They state that resource constraints prevented a detailed manual review of abstracts and that citation measures do not necessarily indicate research quality.

§4.1 ↗

Further research proposed

Priorities include long-term durability, environmental performance, scalable activation and consistent testing methods.
